"My philosophy of life is to improve the quality of life of the patient with an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment"
Dr. Jennefer Portillo de Posadas, is a specialist in neurology, graduated from the University of San Carlos de Guatemala (USAC), later completed a specialty in clinical neurology at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), in addition, at the Hospital of Medical Sciences and Nutrition Salvador Zubirán (Mexico City) made a high specialty in Neuromuscular Diseases, and which is currently the only one that has this specialty in Guatemala.
Subsequently, he carried out practices and studies in neurophysiology, which is in charge of the functional study of the central and peripheral nervous system, for which highly specialized technologies are used for diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic orientation purposes, which is made up of a series of tests such as : nerve conduction velocities, electromyography, evoked potentials, visual auditory or somatosensory, this mainly helps to detect neuromuscular diseases which includes neuropathies, myopathies radiculopathies even immunological diseases such as myasthenia gravis, muscular dystrophies and is also frequently used for traumatic injuries with the aim to detect lesions at the peripheral nerve level.
Dr. Jennefer Portillo de Posadas, has experience in caring for patients with very rare diseases, one of the diseases that occurs less frequently is Myasthenia Gravis, which is estimated to be 1 in 250,000 people, affecting both to men and women who are between 40 years of age and older, also within these diseases are muscular dystrophies, and according to the experience of Dr. Portillo de Posadas several neuromuscular diseases are often confused with muscular dystrophies, and it is For this reason, Dr. Portillo de Posadas always tries to guide the diagnosis relying on her specialty, unique in Guatemala, to re-evaluate the patient and even with genetic tests that are provided within the same Integral Neurological Center.
The Integral Neurological Center clinic has a team of two other prominent neurologists, Dr. Rubén Posadas and Dr. Diego Posadas Pinto. The team is also made up of a Neuropsychologist, who provides support in consultations in certain cases to reach an accurate diagnosis for the patient. The clinic has specialized equipment to be able to carry out all the necessary tests to reach a diagnosis, among the studies that are available to the public are the Electromyogram, which is used to find out how damaged the nerves are through electrodes placed in the legs or arms, this is a study that not everyone can perform, since they must be a specialist, another complementary study of the Electromyogram is the Evoked Potentials, which allows us to record the brain responses caused by sensitive stimuli, resulting in the power assess the integrity of the stimulated pathways, this test is also available to the public at the Integral Neurological Center clinic.
Currently, in Guatemala there is a shortage of professionals trained to be able to carry out this type of study, being Dr. Jennefer Portillo de Posadas, the only one in the country that has the preparation, practice and knowledge for effective recognition neuromuscular diseases and thus reach an accurate diagnosis.
The lack of empathy within medical care has led to the delay of early and accurate diagnosis of patients. Although medicine is advancing and updating is essential, it is also necessary to resume and preserve conventional clinical practice, where the doctor is next to the patient, focusing on the patient's physical examination and clinical signs. The main motivation of Dr. Jennefer Portillo de Posadas is to be able to have an impact on people, leave a mark on their lives, achieving complex diagnoses and providing timely treatment to improve their quality of life.
It is important to be attentive to the signals that the body gives us, and not leave a visit to the neurologist at the same time and thus obtain an accurate diagnosis at the hands of specialized and empathetic professionals such as Dr. Jennefer Portillo de Posadas, and her clinic Neurological Center Integral.
The medical science that studies the nervous system and all its diseases is neurology. To understand diseases of the nervous system, we must take into account that it is made up of the brain, cerebellum, brain stem, spinal nerves, and spinal cord.
The diseases that a neurologist treats range from headaches, neuromuscular diseases, neuropathies that are alterations of the peripheral nerves, causing weakness and numbness in the hands and feet. A neurologist also cares for diseases of the nervous system, among the most common are tumors, epilepsy, Parkinson's, among others.
When a person has muscle weakness, problems getting up from a chair, lifting an object or constantly dropping objects on the floor, a visit to a neurology specialist is recommended.
“My main objective is to have an impact on people and to leave a mark in each of their lives through empathic attention”
