“The best surgeon is not the one who operates the most or does it the fastest, but the one who knows when to operate and when there is a better alternative.”
Dr. Jaime Mora Rosales has extensive experience as a neurosurgeon. He began his studies with an undergraduate degree in medicine at the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala. Subsequently, he continued at the same university to specialize in surgery. At the end of his studies, he decided to specialize in neurosurgery at the Universidad de Guadalajara in Mexico for 5 more years.
He did his training at the Civil Hospital of Guadalajara “Dr. Juan I. Menchaca” world-renowned for minimally invasive neurosurgery. This training consists of approximately 700 procedures per year, of which about 400 cases correspond to spine surgeries and the rest to brain and skull operations. Likewise, he has approached all types of pathologies, both in adults and children, having the capacity to attend to pediatric patients.
Dr. Mora Rosales carried out his training in an extremely specialized center. During his training, he sought to have all the possible tools to be able to provide his patients with a wide range of options. From minimally invasive approaches to endoscopic approaches that require a high level of knowledge. Few neurosurgeons in Guatemala have this training. However, Dr. Jaime Mora is an expert in the field.
His main intention is to provide patients with the necessary information on all treatment options. That way, they will be able to make an informed decision together.
Patients who come to Dr. Jaime Mora’s clinic are treated for a wide range of spinal pathologies. The most frequent is lumbar pain, which is found in the lower back area, and sciatica, which is a pain that originates in the back reaching the legs due to compression, inflammation, or irritation of the sciatic nerve. As for the cranial area, the doctor treats cerebral aneurysms, which are protrusion or dilation of a blood vessel in the brain due to a rupture or blood loss. He also treats brain tumors, which can be benign or malignant, which are masses or growths of abnormal cells in the brain.
The center uses state-of-the-art equipment and technology for the diagnosis and treatment of different pathologies. Among them are tomography, especially cerebral and contrasted, to locate lesions or vascular malformations, which can be of artery or vein. Tumors can also be detected and an idea of their type and composition can be obtained.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is most often used to diagnose spinal problems. This is used to evaluate lesions of the intervertebral disc. This is the area located between the vertebrae, which holds them together and allows their mobility. Also, ligament injuries, are the fibrous and resistant cords that join the bones of the joints. Additionally, tumors can be found, both intramedullary and extramedullary.
They also have a surgical microscope, which is very similar to a robot with 3D visualization. This tool allows a better understanding of the anatomy of the different pathologies that are addressed. For spine surgery, they use fluoroscopy to be able to place screws or prostheses in the right positions.
Dr. Jaime Mora Rosales has vast experience in his specialty abroad, where he has learned from true masters of neurosurgery, dedicated to the operating room with a highly schematic and rigorous system, giving him a precise and reliable methodology for the successful treatment of problems in the spine or brain tissue.
