“The most important thing is that the patient feels comfortable and confident, right from the start. And when they leave, they should feel even more comfortable and happy to have found the treatment they needed.”
Dr. Fernando López San Juan is an Ophthalmologic Surgeon with a High Specialty in Orbit and Oculoplastics. The orbit is the space inside the skull that contains the eye, including its nerves, muscles, eyelids, and the glands that produce tears. Oculoplastics is dedicated to treating medical conditions of the eye, as well as improving the appearance and aesthetics of the surrounding structures. It includes multiple surgical procedures that, for example, restore drooping or inverted eyelids. They also treat tear duct problems and eyelid inflammation and solve cosmetic problems, such as deformities of the orbit and fleshy growths in the eye.
For Dr. López San Juan, it is of utmost importance to have an intimate relationship with his patients, in which each person can feel how important they are to the doctor. For this reason, since he returned from his studies in Mexico, he decided to continue working at the Roosevelt Hospital, as Chief of the Department of Orbit and Oculoplastics. In this way, he can help people, without expecting a great payment in return, and give them excellent treatment, as if he were in the best private hospital. The doctor emphasizes the great teamwork that exists in the hospital, giving him as a professional a comprehensive view of the patient.
Dr. Fernando López studied Medicine for 7 years at the Francisco Marroquín University. Then, he continued his studies for 4 more years to specialize in General Ophthalmology. He then decided to travel to Nuestra Señora de la Luz Hospital in Mexico and study 2 years of High Specialty in Orbit and Oculoplastics. In the latter, he had such intensive training, which included 450 treatments in two years, with which he concluded teaching other professionals in practice.
The highly specialized equipment used by Dr. Fernando López San Juan in his ORBIS Clinic has the autorefractometer, which helps to make estimates of the graduation of the lens and the diagnosis of some corneal diseases; and the phoropter, with which he manages to finish refining the graduation. This is used for patients with myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. It also has a slit lamp, which is used for the physical examination of the eyelids, eyelashes, pressure, cornea, and the eye in general.
Dr. López San Juan recommends not waiting to feel discomfort in the eyes to make a medical consultation. The ideal is to have an annual examination on a regular basis to prevent any disease, which is treated in an advanced form can be very difficult to return to the initial state of vision and the eye. In addition, treatments for advanced eye diseases can be very expensive, such as certain surgeries or treatments with special drops, which can be lifelong. For the doctor, prevention is fundamental, so that his patients can enjoy a quality life, with their vision intact, as much as possible.
“It’s a privilege for me to help people. I understand that vision and the eye itself is a really delicate challenge. You have to be extremely careful and detail-oriented because it is such a small and sensitive organ, which requires the utmost care.”
