Meet the specialist

Dr. Patricia Castellanos de Muñoz is the founder and medical director of CEDAF – Centro de Audición y Entrenamiento Fonético, in Guatemala City. She has more than 25 years of experience in the diagnosis and treatment of audiology in different contexts: hospitals, clinics, schools, and philanthropic foundations, for patients of all ages, from newborns to seniors.

Experience

Since beginning her practice in 1990 as a pioneer in the field of audiology, Dr. Patricia Castellanos continually builds on the strength of several advanced medical degrees by attending annual symposiums and training courses with the world’s most respected manufacturers of hearing loss solutions. Based on international protocols, her innovative intervention options, along with her extensive knowledge and experience, allow Dr. Castellanos to provide services to patients that surpass all providers in Guatemala and Central America.

CEDAF is a comprehensive audiology center dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis and management, and reversal of hearing impairment in infants, children, adolescents, and adults. Dr. Castellanos and the CEDAF clinic have:

Conducted thousands of ABR and OAE tests, the leading test for early hearing screening and diagnosis.
Fitted and supervised over 7000 hearing aids in children and adults.
Audiological management of 120 cochlear implant surgeries in Guatemala and other countries.
Specialized in the calibration and placement of hearing aids, cochlear implants, bone anchor and middle bone implants, with Mrs. Christa Mury de Tobar, a certified audio prosthetic.

Dr. Castellanos explains that: “Early diagnosis and cochlear implant placement are closely related, in that cochlear implantation is one of the recommended management procedures for profoundly hearing impaired children and for adults with progressive hearing loss”.

When children are slow to speak and do not pronounce words correctly, or seem to ignore environmental sounds and lack cognitive ability, it could be an indication of hearing loss. Adults may ask you to repeat answers or increase the volume of the television, or tell you that they do not understand your speech over background noises. In these cases, an audiologist should be consulted. There are a variety of audiological tests available to specialists to enable them to determine with clinical certainty the level of auditory awareness of an infant, child, or adult. Usually, only one test will be sufficient to establish a definitive diagnosis.

Inner ear problems should be suspected when someone is experiencing tinnitus, or when their ears are ringing. Many adults with or without hearing loss suffer from vestibular disorders. Loss of balance or dizziness are strong indicators and are the most frequent symptoms among the adult population. CEDAF’s clinic is equipped with a specialized vestibular therapy center dedicated to helping patients regain balance and confidence in their mobility.

Whether she is a guest lecturer for special international ceremonies or diagnosing hundreds of children in the poorest villages, Dr. Patricia Castellanos exudes professionalism, passion, and high standards of care to all who have the pleasure of meeting her.

In the words of Dr. Castellanos: “Every day is different, a source of tremendous inspiration. We care for the person, their symptoms, and, most importantly, the trust they place in us. We value what they value most: their continued good health.
