Sueño Center is a Guatemalan clinic for diagnosing and treating sleep disorders. More than 5000 patients with neurological or sleep disorders have been treated here. Sueño Center has the most modern equipment and procedures for diagnosing and treating these pathologies, making it one of the best of its kind in Central America. Furthermore, it is the only one that counts on American support in somnology topics. Sueño Center uses high-quality medical standards, which make it possible for 99% of treatments to end successfully.
Sleep disorders decrease the life quality of those who suffer from them, as well as one of their partners. The most common sleeping problems are insomnia, Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS), and sleep apnea. The last one is the most common one and implies, with high probability, a snoring problem. Nowadays, there are 168 patients with sleep apnea in Sueño Center, who are being treated with continuous positive airway pressure or CPAP. Patients with neurological diseases like epilepsy or migraines are also treated in this clinic.
Dr. Álvaro Sobalvarro is the medical director of the Sueño Center and has vast experience in the identification and initial evaluation of sleep disorders. A patient’s initial evaluation begins with a general check, where vital signs like heart rate and blood pressure are verified. Patients are also asked about their symptoms. The collected information is used to determine whether they need to be put under a specific diagnostic test, like nocturnal polysomnography (PSG), the Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), or the Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT).
Afterward, Dr. Sobalvarro sends the initial evaluation results to the American neurologist and somnologist Gregory Mieden, who makes the diagnosis and indicates the best treatment. Dr. Mieden is affiliated with several hospitals in North Carolina, with the American Academy of Sleep, the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. The need for an alliance with an American doctor like Dr. Mieden arose from the fact that there are no professional somnologists in Guatemala. After knowing the adequate treatment for the patient, Dr. Sobalvarro proceeds to the application and tracing of the respective treatment in Sueño Center’s facilities.
Sueño Center’s objective is to help and heal the most amount of patients with neurological and sleep disorders. Finally, these doctors believe that the best treatment is not only the one that uses the correct technical devices, but also the one that considers patient education about how to deal with their disease.
