Dr. Jorge Barillas is a surgeon with a specialization in Traumatology and Orthopedics and a subspecialization in Arthroscopic Shoulder and Knee Surgery in Guatemala City. He treats and prevents any type of trauma pain or injury in athletes and non-athletes. Currently, in the morning he works as an Attending Physician for the Upper Limb ward in the General Accident Hospital “Ceibal” of the Guatemalan Social Security Institute (IGSS), and in the afternoon he evaluates patients at the Shoulder and Knee Traumatology Center.
Dr. Jorge Barillas has extensive experience as a sports doctor of Racing Club, a soccer team of the first division of Argentina. He also worked in Argentine centers, such as the Finochietto Hospital and the Las Americas Hospital in Buenos Aires. Although he is a specialist in the shoulders and knees of athletes, this Guatemalan doctor attends to any problem that concerns the bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints. He’s not only responsible for treating injuries but for preventing them as well.
Some of the conditions that Dr. Barillas treats are knee or shoulder pain, bursitis, tendinitis, rotator cuff injuries, shoulder instability, biceps pathology, fractures, meniscus injuries, anterior cruciate ligament, and chondral injuries. Dr. Barillas is an expert performing a physical examination of the shoulder to determine if the patient has any of the injuries or conditions mentioned above. Occasionally, treatment for a shoulder injury may require surgery through shoulder arthroscopy. Shoulder arthroscopy is a visualization procedure of the shoulder joint that allows diagnosing and treating certain abnormalities present; it is characterized as being a little invasive. After a first review or surgery, Dr. Barillas rehabilitates his patients through physiotherapy, for which he has a variety of instruments such as ultrasound, laser, and magnets. The doctor is a pioneer of magnetotherapy in Guatemala. Magnetotherapy consists of using low-frequency magnetic fields for different medical purposes, such as analgesia and calcium fixation in the bones.
Dr. Jorge Barillas has extensive experience with athletes and non-athletes in different countries which allows him to apply successful treatments for shoulder, knee, and other types of pain related to sports and any other physical activity. The doctor considers that the best treatment starts, not only from the physiological understanding of the human body but from the understanding of each individual mind, since both are unique to each patient. For this traumatologist, orthopedist, and arthroscopist, passion is what makes him and any other human beings go through life: “If you are passionate about something, do not stop until you get it.“, says Dr. Barillas.
